its 2011, nearly 2012 ... this step runs in its own thread, in
parallel with {2..7} and {8..10} which are also threaded.

i'm not the only "editor". the patch gets posted, anyone is free to
comment. i'm happy to be over-ruled by those smarter or more
convincing (or both) than me.
